A diagnosis of "dementia" often presents major upcoming challenges for all those involved: for those affected, their families, and also for professionals in social and nursing care.
How should one act if a person with dementia no longer recognises the effects of a necessary medical treatment (e.g. dialysis) and refuses it?
To age as independently and with dignity as possible, every person can set legally binding courses and make arrangements preventively or in the early stages of dementia.
At the same time, family members and professionals in social and nursing care must also be aware of the rights of people with dementia and know their own duties.
There is a lot to consider in the treatment, care and support of those affected. In some cases, this may involve breaking medical confidentiality or the liability of supervisory persons.
